Fangan
Fangan is an ongoing project, using a drone, recording the stone fanks of Mull and surrounding islands.
Fank: sheepfold; sheep pen; stell; stall; turf stell; bucht; stell enclosure.
A fank is an enclosure of pens used when handing sheep. They vary in size and style.
The project began when our neighbour told us he was going to retire, and I recorded his sheep going through the beautiful stone fank overlooking the sea. It felt like the end of an era. Who knew whether the fank would be used again in the future? I began to fly over and photograph other fanks in the area, and realised what an important and difficult story they tell of changes in land use, and as a result social history, on the islands.
When An Tobar asked me to provide aerial photographs to accompany an exhibition in May 2021 I decided to focus on fanks. During the winter of 2020/2021 I visited and photographed over 50 stone fanks on Mull and Iona. And I am not finished yet, there are still many more to record.
