We quite literally stumbled upon Treshnish: we had no map, no guidebook. It was in the summer of 1988. We were struck by a sense that we were stepping back in time as we walked down the track and it felt magical – unspoiled and untarnished. As we walked we actually said to each other – wouldn’t it be amazing to live somewhere like this?!
When we reached Haunn, we were expecting open fields before reaching the sea. It was a complete surprise to find the cottages nestling in the shelter of a hill, in full summer sunshine. We could feel what a special location it was.
We moved here 6 years later and in planning the renovations over the years we have held onto our first impressions from that first walk here. Over the last 20+ years we have carefully developed and improved the cottages and vernacular buildings, modernising and adding electricity and bathrooms, but always being careful to minimise impact on the environment and the atmosphere.
There is plenty to discover at Treshnish, whether it is just the luxury of sitting in the sitooterie of Duill Cottage and watching for eagles. Or walking and exploring the spectacular Treshnish headland walk. See if you can name the islands you can see to the north, the west and the south.
