With lamb sales behind us, our Blackface ewes are regaining condition on the abundant hill grazing, whilst the in-by flock are enjoying the last grass of the year in the in-by fields, before the salt air from the autumn storms burn it off.
The Autumn light at this time of year can be magical and clear, with long views north to the Uists, and south over Ulva and Gometra to Ben More and out beyond Staffa to the Ross of Mull, and Iona. On quiet evenings you might hear Red deer stags roaring during the rut. It is fairly common to see groups of deer on the hill here all year round, but during the rut, if you are lucky, you might encounter stags fighting for their hinds, in wild battles of clashing antlers and deep roaring.
October is a good time for spotting the Heron and Red-throated Diver. We have Herons nesting in the woodland and so they are often seen flying across from the wood to the lochan next to Duill and back again.
Enjoy the lovely hillside walks to the Cruachan trig point, from where you can see down to Jura in the south.
For rally lovers, the internationally renowned Mull Rally takes place during the second weekend in October. Visitors fill the island and the Tobermory pubs erupt into one big party. This is the only weekend of the year when we might hear traffic noise at Treshnish – but as we are a long way from the centre of events you can still come and enjoy the peace and quiet Treshnish’s remote location offers.
