Flying through April
Living on Mull has lots of perks and one of them has to be the beauty and history in the landscape. I am a certified drone pilot, having undertaken much training and sat several exams! (I hold a GVC and an OA, and about to sit another exam to change my qualification to an A2CofC). What that means is that I follow the guidance and obey the rules about flying near buildings and uninvolved people. I have been flying through April when the weather allows!

Calgary
I fly at Calgary as often as I can. Not as much during the summer as there are more often than not people walking on the beach!
I don’t much like to be walking on the beach when someone else is flying a drone. On one occasion last year a drone flew so low over my head, it moved my hair… when I spoke to the pilot he told me it was because he couldn’t see as the sun was in his eyes. As if that made it ok. It certainly does not. You should never fly with the sun between you and your drone. And you should also be able to see the drone. That was potentially really dangerous.
I love charting the movement of the burn as the winds and tides move its course, from the southern edge of the sand , by the road. Sometimes as far as midway across the beach. The sands themselves shift with the storms and I am trying to record the changes.
Aerial views of the shallows with the light casting shadows on the water, ripple like, are just magical.

Flying at Treshnish
Flying over a familiar landscape gives me a different way of seeing. We spot things in the resulting photographs that we don’t necessarily notice on the ground. One such example is the photograph of Haunn below. It is difficult when walking through the bracken litter to see the remains on the walls of the enclosure, just outside the deer fence. The flat topped raised areas in the field are interesting too when seen from above. We aren’t quite sure what they are.

Scoma
Scoma is a late Medieval settlement in between Haunn and the north coast of Treshnish peninsula. It is so interesting to see just how many buildings there are . It is hard to get a sense of it when walking through the field. Flying in April means the grass is short, so the shadows and shapes of the walls are more pronounced.
