How do you get to Mull?

How do you get to Mull?  Imagine you have just come across Treshnish on Instagram and you’d like to come and stay but you don’t know where Mull even is!

How to get to Mull Craignure ferry Treshnish

Three ferry routes: Oban, Fishnish, Kilchoan

Mull is an island off the west coast of Scotland.  So whichever mode of transport you use to get to the ferry port, you have to get on a Calmac ferry.  There are 3 routes.

Oban to Craignure: This route is the busiest. Therefore you need to book.  If it is fully booked, please don’t worry.  You can come via Lochaline. And this service is a turn up and go – you don’t need to book.

Fishnish to Lochaline:  A slightly longer drive but overall with shorter check in time and faster crossing it doesn’t tend to add much to the journey length.   And, if travelling from the south, it means you have the spectacular drive across Ranch Moor and through Glen Coe, plus the adventure of the Corran Ferry (also turn up and go).

Kilchoan to Tobermory:  A perfect route if coming down to Mull from Mallaig or Skye.  You can pre-book for the day of travel.

Getting to Oban:

By Car: Allow 3 hours from Glasgow.  We prefer to go via Inveraray (nice coffee stop at Brambles cafe) or Stirling.

By train:  There are several trains from Glasgow each day. Pre book.  Allow extra time between arrival of train and departure of ferry, in case the train is late.  It is a beautiful train ride, quite slow so plenty of time to look at the scenery as you travel.

By Bus:  Several buses a day from Glasgow, Citylink.  And now electric buses from Edinburgh as well as Glasgow, Inverness – and more, Embra.

Getting to Fishnish and Kilchoan:

By car: Aim to get to Fishnish and Kilchoan by mid afternoon, to be assured of getting on a boat in the summer when it tends to be busier.

Allow an hour and a half from Corran to Fishnish.  Corran is approximately an hour from Tyndrum (as is Oban).

By bus: Look at Shiel Buses.  They run buses to both Kilchoan and Lochaline.

By train: No trains beyond Fort William.
