Mull eco friendly cottages
The Mull eco friendly cottages here at Treshnish offer a sustainable solution for your eco friendly holiday accommodation. We are passionate about eco friendly and sustainable tourism. Have a look at our What We do What you can Do pages for further details of what we do and what you can do during your stay. Our Environmental Policy is here.

Our Story
When we first moved to Treshnish in 1994 we had a lot of work ahead of us. The cottages were in need of extreme TLC. This gave us the opportunity to renovate as carefully as we could – maximising insulation and minimising energy loss whilst holding on to their unique character and history. Looking back we must have been mad! It took us decades to get the cottages how we liked them aesthetically and to be as sustainable and eco as possible. Every decision was multi faceted.
Renewables
We have 2 6kW wind turbines and 4kW array of solar Photo voltaic panels. Between them they generate about 80% of what we use across the farm. At one point we thought about putting in a third turbine but realised we should be working on reducing our electricity consumption first. We had always used low energy light bulbs and have gradually moved over to LEDs. (There may be a few low energy ones lurking but they will be replaced in due course!)

Electricity and heating
As part of our environmental policy guests take responsibility for their own energy usage, something we have done this since we opened. Guests pay for their energy at the end of their stay according to meter readings taken on arrival and departure. This enables us to charge for accommodation only without having to factor in the unseen unknown energy cost of our guests. It is a better deal for our guests and means energy is less likely to be wasted.

Green Tourism
We were members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme until recently, holding a Gold Award for over 20 years. Our membership has now lapsed but this does not mean we are any less careful about the environment or about reducing our carbon footprint. We hope once our staff changes have settled we will have the resource to join up again. But please rest assured we have not relaxed our environmental ethos.

EV Charging
We have a double electric car chargepoint on the north side of the farm steading by the Treshnish farmhouse. Our charge point is no longer on the public register of EV chargers however it is there for our guests use. Payments are managed by Voltshare, and you don’t need to download their map.
Have a look at the Chargeplace Scotland map for other chargers on the island. Guests staying at Haunn with an electric car should be aware the charge point is a mile away. We cannot allow you to charge your car from the electricity supply in the cottage. We are not insured for this.
