Open Farm Sunday

May 30, 2018

This year we are hosting our annual farm walk as part of Open Farm Sunday.  We are hosting it in conjunction with Mull and Iona Food Trail’s Moveable Feasts! It is on Sunday June 10th, and kicks off at 11.30.  There is no need to book a place on the guided walk – please just be here, ready to walk, at 11.30am.  You are welcome to bring your own picnic or you can pre-book one of Ballygown’s delicious Moveable Feasts.

Open Farm Sunday

Open Farm Sunday began in 2006, the brainchild of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming).  We have been LEAF supporters since it started in 1991.   The aims of LEAF are to encourage the farming industry to produce good quality food in an environmentally sustainable way.     Open Farm Sunday gives farmers a chance to talk about how they do this.  It gives the public a chance to see where their food comes from and how it is produced.  That has to be a good thing!

Open Farm Sunday here at Treshnish

We hosted Open Farm Sunday once before – in 2013!!  Since then we have hosted guided walks as part of the Coronation Meadows Project or National Meadows Day. Last time, it was a bright hot day and we had a great turnout of walkers and visitors.  This year we are offering a guided walk with Rangers from the Mull and Iona Ranger Service and the RSPB.    Followed by a delicious Moveable Feast (must be pre-booked) provided by Ballygown Restaurant.

Moveable Feast or Bring your own!

There is no need to book a place on the guided walk, but if you want to have a Ballygown Moveable Feast, please pre-book by phoning Jeanette on 01688 500113.   Alternatively you are welcome to come along and bring your own picnic!

What to expect

We will set off from the farm at 11.30am for a guided walk.  Where we walk will depend on how the fields are looking and on the weather.   We usually walk about 2 miles, stopping to look at plants and birds along the way.   Jeanette will bring the Moveable Feast picnic up at 1.30pm.  If it is dry we will picnic outside.  And if it is wet, we will picnic in the shelter of the farm building!  We will have a Donations pot for RNLI and Mary’s Meals.

No dogs please

As we may be walking through fields with ewes and lambs, please do not bring your dogs with you.
