I know it’s a marketing ploy and therefore probably meaningless, but it is nice to know that travellers on the Trip advisor website rate the Isle of Mull as one of the top 10 islands in Europe. They also rate Calgary as one of the top 25 beaches in the UK! And it is right on our doorstep…
I walked the dog this morning, having dropped Daughter off at the school bus, and pondered statistics and this ‘top’ claims as I walked along the water’s edge, watching bubbles of spume racing on the wind across the sand, and the oystercatchers dancing ahead of me, their staccato footsteps making tracks in the wet sand.
Calgary is a wonderful beach, and it is a great beach for children and families. Easy to park nearby; not far to walk; shallow sands – perfect for paddling, and for young beginner swimmers; lovely untouched surroundings; public conveniences nearby, plus a tea-room at Calgary. What more could a family on a Hebridean holiday want? There are so many other beaches on the island though, but they need a little more discovery and longer walks to reach. Well worth the effort though. We have maps in the cottages and are happy to share the secret beach locations with our guests!
I always enjoy walking on Calgary Beach, especially early in the morning, when the oystercatchers are about. The sun had not yet come over the hill behind Calgary house, but it won’t be long before it does.
